Healthy Homemade Apple Crumble Pie (Flourless, Vegan, GF)

Not gonna lie here, this healthy homemade apple crumble pie is pretty much the same like my apple crumble mini pies from a few years ago, but it looks like their parent. Making this apple pie from scratch, I used oats to prepare the crust and for the crumble on top and apples, cinnamon and coconut oil for the filling. It turns into a delicious fall dessert or even breakfast, that you’ll want to eat every day (well if you choose the right apples – more on that later)!

Healthy Homemade Apple Crumble Pie

So this apple crumble pie is generally flourless and vegan (use maple syrup, not honey!) as it’s made with oats and there are no eggs or butter or dairy or meat in this recipe. Shocking I know! Apple pie without meat? Are you kidding me? It will taste like nothing.

And you can use gluten-free oats to make it gluten-free, if you need to be eating this way.

Now, I topped mine with ice cream, because I was going through a phase when ice cream became one of my biggest cravings. Even though I hadn’t broken up with anyone and wasn’t starring in a romantic “comedy” from the 90’s, 2000’s or 2010’s. I even tried “healthy” ice cream and it wasn’t bad, but it’s just not the same.

Pick The Right Apples!

Okay, a bit of a warning: taste your apples before you make this. I made this pie recently after I went apple picking with my sister and her family. All I can say: FREE APPLES. Who knew, they grow on trees! Surprise!!! I think we saved like 10 bucks from picking this many apples.

It was a super fun day, we also bounded with some sheep, we almost climbed trees and some of us stepped into sheep shit and things got messy. Help, it’s in my hair…

Even my little nephew got very excited because, free apples. He kept eating them and repeating “Apple. Pieeee.” He’s two and very cute.

Well, as cute as he might be, he didn’t get to eat the apple pie I made with those apples, because I don’t share food and his cuteness means nothing to me. I’m kidding, sometimes I’d share a little bit of my food with a dog or a cat. When I don’t like it a lot, of course. I’m not stupid.

The truth is those apples were sour.

When those apples met the lemons and limes on the kitchen counter, they just pointed and laughed for hours. As in, hydrochloric acid, which has a pH of 3 of is nothing to those apples…Such a loser, that HCl.

Still, the good eater that I am, I ate that pie with quite a lot of ice cream. Those were some fun sour mornings, I’m telling you. Baking a sour apple pie can make you quite an outsider and lonely. Nobody wants to touch that thing and listen to your constant complaints of how sour it is. Therefore, choose wisely.

And if you’re picking your own apples thinking you’re saving money and can maybe sell those apples or use them in like, I don’t know – an apple pie, think again. Sometimes you’ll have to pay with your taste buds and lots of saliva to neutralize that acidic pH.

Okay, but if you make this apple crumble pie with normal, sweet delicious apples that don’t taste like the world is about to end, you’ll be very happy. And you’ll have a healthy apple pie for dessert. Apple. Pieeee.

How To Make Healthy Apple Pie

  • Preheat your oven!
  • Make a crumbly crust in your food processor out of ground oats, melted coconut oil and some water. You can also add in some nuts, but if you’re allergic to nuts or want to share this with a young child – leave out the nuts and use oats only.
  • Spread about 2/3 of this “dough” in a spring form using your hands. Keep the rest of the dough for the crumbly topping.
  • Peel and chop the apples, then saute them in a pan with some coconut oil and cinnamon. Make sure to taste the apples before adding on top of the crust.
  • Spread the apples over the crust and top with the rest of the dough, making small crumbles with your hands. Optionally you can add walnuts or pecans here.
  • Bake at 180C/350F for about 30 minutes, but make sure to be checking after 20 minutes, ovens are different!

Let the pie cool off to not burn your tongue, top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Now I realize this is so not suitable for this month’s dairy-free and gluten-free challenge…There are oats in there, I topped it with ice cream, but I did make this weeks ago before the challenge, so you’ll have to excuse me.

I hope you enjoy this healthy fall dessert nevertheless. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback by commenting on Pinterest or Instagram!
