I want to share with you a small homemade cleaner I prepared and that I use every day: a homemade butcher block cleaner. It’s very simple to make, you only need three ingredients: lemon peels, undiluted vinegar and patience. I found similar cleaners over at Pinterest but I modified mine just a little bit.
Every morning, I put an effort to drink a glass of warm lemon water, so I already had a bag lemons readily available. I thought I would only need 4 big lemons for this project but ended using 6 big lemons instead. I peeled the lemons and only kept the peels that I then cut into small pieces. I put the small pieces inside a medium size mason jar:
Then, I filled the mason jar to the top with undiluted vinegar:
I left the lemon peel soak in vinegar for 10 days, it was enough time to infuse the vinegar with lemon scent. In her blog, Jill recommends for us to leave it closed for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I ran out of my last ingredient ’patience’ and opened it up after only 10 days, it still works very well and smells very good:
I then poured the liquid into a plastic spray bottle, Jill suggests to add water, I didn’t it because I before this I used to use undiluted vinegar directly onto the butcher block to disinfect it, so I wasn’t afraid of using the pure mix :
I’ve been using this easy homemade cleaner to clean my butcher block every single day. You can also use this cleaner for your entire kitchen, I however only use it on my butcher block. I also want to let you know, I was able to refill the mason jar full of the same lemon peels with new undiluted vinegar and the second batch was as good as the first one. I will try a third batch with the same peels and see if it still works. Worst case scenario, I can always spray it on a salad (I hope you know I am kidding, right? who eats salads?)
Have you tried any homemade cleaners lately? There are so many of them out there but I only gave this one a try because I needed something good to clean my butcher block with and I just so happened to have the necessary ingredients:
